Apple has launched new iWorks 2008 that containing new great application, one of them is Numbers. Numbers is a spreadsheet application that gives you ton features, like Intelligent Tables, Flexible Canvas, import from Microsoft Excel, and export to PDF natively, you can look here for complete features. This time I want share how to make its chart easily.

Like Microsoft Excel, you can create chart from data table in Numbers. If you create chart from a simple table you wouldn’t get any problem with that. But if you create it with more complex table structure you will get a little bit problems. But I want to start it with simple one.

Open Numbers application, because I put its alias in my Dock, so then I click it there.

Template chooser dialog will show up as your first screen, choose Blank, click Choose button.

Create a table like table in picture below (or you can create your owns)

For first way you can click the chart icon in the toolbar directly, and I choose the Columns chart type.

You will get a chart like picture below and I am ensuring that you don’t want the chart result.

So you must set its source data in table so as the result which you want, to change its data, just click the cart and cell that containing chart’s source data will highlighted automatically then click small circle that located on right bottom cell then hold and drag until it adjusted.

And you can look the result.

Second way is block the source cell first with click, hold and drag it until all data covered.

And click chart icon in the toolbar.

You’ll get the chart directly, and if you want reverse the axis data just click the option icon like shown in picture below

and you’ll get the result like this picture.

The problem is how to create chart that the source data is nonadjacent cells like picture below.

To create it, press Command key then click, hold and drag first column then repeat it to second column and repeated it until all data has blocked (don’t forget to block the header too).

Click Chart icon in the toolbar.

You’ll get your chart.

note :

You may to create your own chart size by press Option key when you click Chart icon in the toolbar.

Use Shift key if you block the cell with keyboard.

Today, email is a great way to communicate between peoples beside Short Message Service (SMS) and instant messaging service. With email you can receive attachment file and large text with it. Including if you’ve joined with many mailing lists, you’ll many emails every day from them. And if you don’t organize your entire emails you can be confuse when you want read it at next day.

This time, I want to share a tutorial to organize your emails using Email Mac OS X built-in application. This application is powerful email client application for me. In my experiment, it can filter tons spam and junk email with training it even for just once.

All right, I consider you join into Visual Basic programming mailing list and you want to group that mailing list into one mail box.
1. Open Mail application by click it on launcher bar.

2. Create a new mail box first by click Mailbox -> New Mailbox menu.

3. Give it name which represents the mailing list name such as Visual Basic Mailing List.

4. If it is success, you can see it on left sidebar.

5. In your Inbox, select an example message. This message will extract its information which will need in filter settings later. So, in my case I click a message which came from Visual Basic Mailing list.

6. Then click Mail -> Preferences menu.

7. Click Rules tab, and then click Add Rule button.

8. Enter you own rule name in Description box. Make sure, you give it a represents name. Choose any value on If any of the following conditions are met combo box. Choose To and Contains value in next combo box and it will enter the mailing list address automatically (It takes value from your selected message). In those both combo boxes you can customize the value, just look your needs. In next combo box, choose Move Message value and choose your mail box name (in my case I chose Visual Basic Mailing List value) in to mailbox combo box. You can also adjust its value as your need. And click OK button when you’ve done.

9. Click Yes button when you are confirming to apply the new rule.

10. And my messages which came from the Visual Basic mailing list will move into Visual Basic Mailing List mailbox automatically.

Now, your emails are more organize.

Youtube provides so many videos for us, and then sometimes I want to save the video into my laptop to play it next time. Unfortunately, Youtube doesn’t provide a tool or menu to save their video collection. You can find many software or Firefox plugins to help you to save Youtube video. But do you have known, you can save the video with Safari without added plugin. And this is a good trick especially for Mac user.
If you want to try this trick, open your Safari application first. And here are the steps to save their video:
1. Type www.youtube.com in URL box to open youtube.com.

2. Locate the video which you will download. You can search them first. Usually, I was using the search box. To use it, type the video keyword. For example, I want to find anything that linked to iMac word, so I type “imac” (without double quote) in box then press Enter.

3. After Youtube finds the video which related to your keyword, you can see them in result page, choose one in result list by click its link.

4. When the video has displayed,

open Safari’s Activity window by click Window – Activity menu.

5. In Activity window, find item which contains a word get_video and usually has biggest file size (To determine file size you can find it at Status field) and then double click that item.

6. Then Safari will download that file automatically, and you can see the download status in Downloads window that open automatically too.

7. After the file has downloaded, you’ll get a file that named: get_video and by default, Safari put it at Desktop.

8. Rename that file with your own name but give it .flv extension

click Add button when you asked.

then you’ll get a result file with .flv extension (In my case, I give it name: imac.flv)

9. Double click it to open the video.

Make sure that you’ve had installed FLV Player. I use this VLC Player to play FLV file on my Mac. I never try this on Safari for Windows but I think you can run on it too.

I’ve wrote an article about install Windows Vista on Mac OS X through Parallels Desktop as virtual machine software. Now, I will write about customizing Parallels Desktop configurations so that Windows Vista/XP which runs above it can run smoother.
I configure it on my Macbook that has memory 1 GB, Hard drive 80GB so if you Mac has more memory you can customize with yours. I just write configuration points which have to get your attention.
1. To setting Parallels Desktop virtual machine you have to open it first and it Stop mode, if your virtual machine in Suspend mode, press Stop button first.

2. To open Configuration Editor window, you can click on items in Configuration section (if you’re looking my picture below, click area is inside red rectangle) or go to Edit – Virtual Machine menu.

3. In Configurations Editor, click Resource: Options, click Advanced tab and then make sure Acceleration level set to High and Enable Intel VT-x support is checked.

4. Next, click Resource: Shared Applications. I suggest you disable Share Windows application to Mac and Share Mac applications to Windows with uncheck their checkboxes. Although they are great features, but if you enable them, Parallels Desktop will create many shortcuts and actually you will use shortcuts rarely or even you’ll never use them.

5. Next, click Resource: Shared Profile. The decision is in your hands. But I was choosing to disable it, because it will make you confuse and make your Windows be slower. And in my experience, I got some errors with it.

6. In fact, Parallels Desktop support 3D application ran on its virtual machine but it optimized for Mac products which have dedicated 3D card such as Macbook Pro and iMac. But you can optimize the configurations so that Parallels Desktop permits its virtual machine support Direct X. To enable the option, click Resource: Video and check Enable DirectX support checkbox so as you can run Direct X applications.

7. To configure memory amount of virtual machine, click Resource: Memory. If you run Windows XP on it set memory to 384 MB and Vista to 512 MB. This setting is important because if you configure the amount too large, you Mac OS X will run very slowly. In my experiment, I’ve set Video Memory to 16MB if I ran Windows XP and 32MB to Windows Vista.

8. In Resource: Floppy, sure I disable the Floppy because I don’t see its benefit.

9. In Resource: Hard Disk, you can find an important button here. Parallels Desktop has two mode of its Virtual Hard Disk. Expanding Hard disk and Plan Hard disk. In Expanding hard disk your virtual hard disk has flexible size as your Windows XP/Vista needs. Contrary with Expanding hard disk, Plain hard drive has consistent of file size. And Parallels Desktop set to Expanding mode by default. Unfortunately, sometimes Expanding hard disk has larger file size than the actual used. So, if you feel your virtual hard disk file size is too big, go to Resource: Hard Disk, click Advanced tab and click Compact button to reduce your virtual hard disk file.

10. In Resource: USB Controller, I suggest you choose Ask me what to do option. So, every time you plug your USB device, you’ll ask by system. Mac OS X or Parallels Desktop virtual machine that will use it.

OK, we’ve discussed Parallels Desktop configurations which must get attention. And don’t forget Parallels Desktop also install its tools which calls Parallels Tools Center in its virtual machine. For example, on Windows Vista you can open it by double click its icon in systray or you can open it through Start – All Programs – Parallels Tools menu.

You can compact your hard disk in this tool/Parallels Tools Center. Click Tool: Disk Compacting, check Execute all stages at once then click Start button and it will takes 30-90 minutes. And you can find the others Tool inside it.

Unlike Yahoo Messenger that has built up status to show iTunes track name as its status so as let your chat friend know your song that you’re listening, Skype don’t has it. And I found the trick from johnwilker.com (Thanks John…) to make Skype show iTunes track information as its status. This trick is for Skype Mac version.
This trick using Proxi software from Griffin, you can download it here, OK I just want make it clearer with write it step by step.
1. Download Proxi with link above (http://proxi.griffintechnology.com/).

2. After it has downloaded, double click downloaded file Proxi_v1.4.dmg (file name may vary) and then after dmg file has opened double click Proxi.pkg icon.

3. After installation process has done, open Proxi program (By default, the location in your Application folder).

4. In Proxi window click iTunes Monitor (you can find it at Component section) and click then drag it to Triggers section.

5. If Proxi window don’t show up click Proxi’s Window menu then click Proxi Editor menu.

6. Click iTunes Monitor in Triggers section and then check Trigger when track changes value.

7. Then click Task button and click Insert Task – AppleScript menu.

8. Click AppleScript in Tasks section then choose Run custom AppleScript option (or if you’ve create the file you may choose Run as existing AppleScript option then browse to your Script file), and type this script below.

set messageText to ""
set SkypeIsRunning to 0
try
    tell application "iTunes"
set trackName to name of current track
set trackArtist to artist of current track
set trackAlbum to album of current track
    end tell
if not trackArtist = "" then
set trackArtist to " sing by " & trackArtist
    end if
if not trackAlbum = "" then
set trackAlbum to " from album " & trackAlbum
    end if
    set messageText to "Listening > " & trackName & ", " & trackArtist & trackAlbum & " <"
end try

set commandText to "SET PROFILE MOOD_TEXT " & messageText
tell application "System Events"
set SkypeIsRunning to count (every process whose name is "Skype")
end tell

if SkypeIsRunning > 0 then
    tell application "Skype"
send command commandText script name "test"
    end tell
end if

9. And remember this trick can apply as long as Proxi software is ran, to make it easy just run it at login with set it from its Preferences, you can access it from Proxi – Preference menu and then check the Start at login option.

10. Close your Proxi window and then open iTunes and try to play a song.

11. If you run it for the first time you will asked to allowing Proxi and AppleScript run for Skype.

12. And your iTunes track information has set as Skype Status.

(source: http://www.johnwilker.com)
note :
On Skype 2.7 or above, they had including this ability. Just open Skype Preferences menu and check Show iTunes song in my mood message in Advanced tab. But with this trick at least you can customize your mood message.

I want to share the comparison between MS-DOS syntax and BASH commands; hopefully it can help you….
Actually, I use it on Ubuntu 7.04 but I had try it with my Macbook and using MacOS X Terminal and I found that almost all commands that I had wrote here are worked too in MacOS X Terminal.
Here are comparison between BASH commands and MS-DOS commands:

If you’re a new Mac OS X user, maybe you confused when you’ll connect to your office network that using Windows Sharing system and want to open the shared folder. It’s maybe a small problem but for the new user maybe it’s their (including me) headache source OK, I’ll share how to access Windows sharing folder from your Mac OS X system….
Make sure your destination PC has been set the sharing folder, the mark the shared folder is you’ll see the hand icon in the shared folder.

And how access it from your Mac OS X computer, just follow these:
1. Click Go – Connect to Server on Finder menu.

2. And type
smb://destination_computer_name
or
smb://destination_computer_ip_address
on the Server Address input, for example :
smb://server-sql
or
smb://192.168.1.1
.

This time, I want to share several UNIX Utilities/commands that I use them everyday. Of course,
ls, su, sudo
are not included because as you know ehm.. ehm sure they are the most ‘important’ UNIX commands, at least for me. And hopefully this article may help many Mac OS X users, especially for newbie users…
And my favorite commands are:
1. top
This command has function to show table that contains list of program that’s currently running on your Mac computer (including program that running on background too). And how do to use this command? At console prompt, type
top
then hit Enter key and to exit from this command type
q
.

2. kill
You can force quit a locked program with this command. Yup, you can use the Activity Monitor and force quit the locked program with it. But this command can be a helpful command, for example if you want kill program at remote Mac OS X through telnet, you can use this command (Sometimes I feel it close faster than using GUI version). Unless you use sudo command, you can kill your ‘own’ program. My suggest is run top command first to get program ID number, and type
kill -parameter id number
. For example if you want close program Smultron that has ID number 975 (figure-1) and you want kill it with parameter KILL(non-catchable, non-ignorable) type
kill -9 975
and Smultron will closed soon.

3. bc
If you are in UNIX shell environment and you need calculator, it means you need this command. I am very like this command because simple and fast (you are not having to open GUI calculator version or dashboard). To use it just type
bc
at prompt. And type the expression that want you calculate, for example type
2*3
. That’s so simple, isn’t it? To exit from this command, types quit and then press ENTER.

4. open
You can open a file or more with its association program or you may open it with your chosen program. For example, if you want open Safari program, just type
open -a Safari
or you want open file test.htm with Safari just type
open -a Safari test.htm
. Maybe you think this command isn’t too useful, but wait for minutes… you can open all files with specified file name. For example you want open files that containing with word test, just type
open -a Safari *test*
and then press ENTER. And all files in the folder that have part name “test” will opened with Safari. This command can be more powerful if you use it into automated script.

5. ps
If you look another way to look all the programs that running on your Mac, even it invisible, just type
ps -auxw
and you will get the detail.

6. shutdown
You can shutdown your Mac instantly with this command. You need root user for run this command. To use this command just type
shutdown -

<parameter> time</parameter>
, for example if you want shutdown your Mac now, type
sudo shutdown -h now
and type your administrator password if you asked. You can also use this command to restart the computer, type
sudo shutdown -r now
.

7. gzip
This command to compress a file and delete it automatically. For example if you want compress file test.txt, type
gzip test.txt
. That’s so simple, isn’t it?

8. tar
If you’re a UNIX user, maybe you’re very like with this format if you want combining/compress multiple files. To use it type:
tar -cf file.tar destination file/folder
. For example if you want to combining file test.htm to test.tar, type
tar -cf test.tar test htm
and you files will combining them into one file with light speed and if you want combining and compress it type
tar -czf test.tar /Document/test
so all files inside test folder will combining and compress into test.tar

9. zip
Zip format is very popular with Windows user. Zip command will combining and compresses them. To use it type
zip file_name.zip destination file/folder
, for example if you want zip all files inside test folder type into my_file.zip file, type
zip my_file.zip /Document/test/
. For note:
a. For tar and zip you can zip multiple files with some criteria. For example if you want zip all files that containing word “s” in its filename, type
zip my_file.zip *s*
.
b. If you want get help on each command use
info
or
man
command, for example
info zip
or
man gzip
.
Hopefully, this article may help you….
