Windows XP and Vista will run autorun.inf file every time you plug your USB drive or flash drive into your USB port. That’s a cool thing when first time I saw it. Unfortunately, virus makers are using autorun be their gate to infect their computers victim. Their change or make autorun to execute virus file run every time you’re using it. If you feel, you don’t need autorun, just disable it and make your computer be safer.
There are two available ways to disable it, through Administrative Tools – Group Policy (If you’re using Windows XP Professional Edition) or Registry Editor.

This time, I want to write article disable autorun which through Registry Editor.

1.	As I said above, to modify Registry value, use Registry Editor. Click Start –> Run, enter
regedit
in box and the press Enter.

2.	Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Policies / Explorer
path.

3.	Inside Explorer key, you’ll see the NoDriveTypeAutorun key.

4.	By default, it has default value:
91
. To disable flask disk autorun, replace it with 95. And make sure, leave type data to hexadecimal. Click OK button.

5.	Close Registry Editor and Restart your computer. And then try to plug your flash drive. If you don’t see the autorun dialog, it means you success to run this trick.

You can also replace NoDriveTypeAutoran value to
b5
to disable autorun on flask drive and CD-ROM.

I have been writing article about hide clock at sys tray through taskbar properties. And that’s an easy way to hide or show it, so do the other users. So if you want to make it safer, hide it through Windows registry.
Like usual, if you want to change the registry value, you’ll need to open Registry Editor first.
1. To open Registry Editor, click Start – Run menu, type
regedit
in text box and then press Enter key.

2. In Registry Editor, drive to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Policies | Explorer
path.

3. In that path, find key:
HideClock
if you don’t find it. To create
HideClock
key, right click on right panel, choose New – DWORD value menu and then change the new value name to HideClock. Then change its value to 1 by double click it and then in Value data: box to 1 and then click OK button.

then your Registry Editor will be like picture below.

4. Restart your computer and then look at your systray. Your clock is gone.

You can’t reactivate clock through taskbar properties because its radio check is disabled.
To show it again, just change the
HideClock
value to 0 or delete that key.

I’ve wrote an article about install Windows Vista on Mac OS X through Parallels Desktop as virtual machine software. Now, I will write about customizing Parallels Desktop configurations so that Windows Vista/XP which runs above it can run smoother.
I configure it on my Macbook that has memory 1 GB, Hard drive 80GB so if you Mac has more memory you can customize with yours. I just write configuration points which have to get your attention.
1. To setting Parallels Desktop virtual machine you have to open it first and it Stop mode, if your virtual machine in Suspend mode, press Stop button first.

2. To open Configuration Editor window, you can click on items in Configuration section (if you’re looking my picture below, click area is inside red rectangle) or go to Edit – Virtual Machine menu.

3. In Configurations Editor, click Resource: Options, click Advanced tab and then make sure Acceleration level set to High and Enable Intel VT-x support is checked.

4. Next, click Resource: Shared Applications. I suggest you disable Share Windows application to Mac and Share Mac applications to Windows with uncheck their checkboxes. Although they are great features, but if you enable them, Parallels Desktop will create many shortcuts and actually you will use shortcuts rarely or even you’ll never use them.

5. Next, click Resource: Shared Profile. The decision is in your hands. But I was choosing to disable it, because it will make you confuse and make your Windows be slower. And in my experience, I got some errors with it.

6. In fact, Parallels Desktop support 3D application ran on its virtual machine but it optimized for Mac products which have dedicated 3D card such as Macbook Pro and iMac. But you can optimize the configurations so that Parallels Desktop permits its virtual machine support Direct X. To enable the option, click Resource: Video and check Enable DirectX support checkbox so as you can run Direct X applications.

7. To configure memory amount of virtual machine, click Resource: Memory. If you run Windows XP on it set memory to 384 MB and Vista to 512 MB. This setting is important because if you configure the amount too large, you Mac OS X will run very slowly. In my experiment, I’ve set Video Memory to 16MB if I ran Windows XP and 32MB to Windows Vista.

8. In Resource: Floppy, sure I disable the Floppy because I don’t see its benefit.

9. In Resource: Hard Disk, you can find an important button here. Parallels Desktop has two mode of its Virtual Hard Disk. Expanding Hard disk and Plan Hard disk. In Expanding hard disk your virtual hard disk has flexible size as your Windows XP/Vista needs. Contrary with Expanding hard disk, Plain hard drive has consistent of file size. And Parallels Desktop set to Expanding mode by default. Unfortunately, sometimes Expanding hard disk has larger file size than the actual used. So, if you feel your virtual hard disk file size is too big, go to Resource: Hard Disk, click Advanced tab and click Compact button to reduce your virtual hard disk file.

10. In Resource: USB Controller, I suggest you choose Ask me what to do option. So, every time you plug your USB device, you’ll ask by system. Mac OS X or Parallels Desktop virtual machine that will use it.

OK, we’ve discussed Parallels Desktop configurations which must get attention. And don’t forget Parallels Desktop also install its tools which calls Parallels Tools Center in its virtual machine. For example, on Windows Vista you can open it by double click its icon in systray or you can open it through Start – All Programs – Parallels Tools menu.

You can compact your hard disk in this tool/Parallels Tools Center. Click Tool: Disk Compacting, check Execute all stages at once then click Start button and it will takes 30-90 minutes. And you can find the others Tool inside it.

OK, this time I want to share my experiment results after exploring my system32 folder that located inside Windows folder. And I had found 6 great (I call it “great” because those 6 softwares have great functions and I hope you agree with me and why I call it “hidden” because Windows XP doesn’t put the shortcuts in Start Menu so there are not many people to know about those softwares). OK, I will share it for you…

And here are my chosen software lists and maybe these list are old softwares but if you use them you’ll get better respond or benefits.
1. Windows Media Player 6.4
Yup, this is a old player maybe you’re using it on Windows 2000 but I think you’ll get better speed with it but with the old ‘cloth’, you know it…. if you’re a person that priority the function you may choose it, you can open it with click Start – Run menu and type
mplayer2
in textbox

and Windows Media Player will opened (figure-2).

Yes, I know maybe you think why doesn’t using the Windows Media Player 11? On several computers, Windows Media Player 11 run too slow and of course if you choose to run Windows Media Player 6.4 you will get better speed.

2. Winchat
You can open it through Start – Run menu and type
winchat
in textbox

and then Winchat will opened with its simple form.

You can use Winchat likes winpopup. So, if you search “winpopup looking” software on Windows XP, use Winchat. To connect to other computer just click Dial button on toolbar and just choose or type the computer name.

And don’t forget to check the Network DDE and Network DDE DSDM in Windows Services first, if those services is in stop status, just start it (Start Network DDE DSDM first then Network DDE). I had been wrote an article about how to start and stop the Windows Service too, then make sure that your friend’s computer has open Winchat too.

3. Netmeeting
If Winchat works on local area network only, Netmeeting works on internet connection. To open it just clicks Start – Run menu and then type
conf
in textbox.

If you’re run it for the first time, you will asked to set the configuration (figure7 – figure15)

after you set it then Netmeeting will opened.

And if you want to connect it to other client/computer click Dial button and Find someone window will show up and you just choose the user that listed there.

4. Private Character Editor
If you want to make your own character you can use this software. To open it just click Start – Run menu and then type
eudcedit
then click OK button,

and Private Character Editor window will opened,

and if you want learn more about this software, check this my article.

As you know that Registry Editor is a gate that can change the all your Windows registry value. It means if somebody want to destroy your Windows XP just open Registry Editor and change the important. So I want to share the trick to disable or enable Registry Editor with one click…

There are so many tricks to enable / disable Registry Editor but I think this trick is easy enough to do that although we need to writing a script to first time but after your script has done then it’s be easier, we will use the Visual Basic Script language here.

OK, follow this trick:
1. Open Notepad (or your favorite text editor) to type the script via Start – Run menu and type
notepad
in textbox then click OK button or press Enter
key.

2. And type the script like this:

Dim otakatik
ManageRegedit()
Sub ManageRegedit()
Set otakatik=WScript.CreateObject("wscript.shell")
describe="Type 0 or 1 : " & VbCrLf &_
             "[0] -> Enable Regedit." & VbCrLf &_
             "[1] -> Disable Regedit."

question=InputBox(describe, "Edit Regedit",0)
otakatik.RegWrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion" &_
                        "\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools",question,"REG_DWORD"

If question=1 Then
   MsgBox "Registry is disabled.",VbInformation, "Disabled"
Else
   If question=0 Then
      Msgbox "Registry is enabled.",VbInformation, "Enabled"
      otakatik.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion" &_
                                "\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools"
   Else
      Msgbox "Input 0 or 1 only !",VbInformation, "Wrong Input"
      ManageRegedit()
   End If
End If
End Sub

You can copy and paste to your notepad.

3. Save it, click File – Save As.

4. Change Save As Type to All Files and give it the name
regedit.vbs
(or whatever you want but the extension has to
vbs
).

5. Then make sure that you have the right file name format, you can see it on Notepad title bar.

6. Open your folder that containing
regedit.vbs
file.

7. Double click that file and Edit Regedit window will opened.

8. If you fill the textbox with value 0, Registry Editor will enable to open.

9. But if you fill it with value 1,

Registry Editor will disable to open.

10. Now, try to open your Registry Editor and you will get a notification that Registry Editor is disabled.
